A growing movement of parents and educators across San Francisco is challenging the expanding role of digital devices and artificial intelligence in public schools, centering their opposition on an automated reading program designed to listen to and evaluate young learners.

The pushback has crystallized around a campaign led by the local grassroots organization Tech In Check San Francisco. By Tuesday morning, an online petition launched by the group had collected nearly 1,000 signatures from district families, classroom instructors, and local residents calling on educational leaders to impose strict boundaries on classroom screen time and artificial intelligence software.

Advocates are specifically asking the San Francisco Unified School District to deactivate generative AI software, conversational chatbots, and open internet search engines on devices assigned to pupils. The coalition is also seeking an immediate halt to automated programs used to instruct elementary school students in foundational academic subjects, singling out an interactive literacy product created by the educational technology firm Amira Learning.

The organizers have emphasized that their campaign does not seek a total ban on all educational technology. Instead, the petition outlines a demand that digital tools be deployed with strict transparency, deliberate intent, and only in instances where there is verifiable proof that the software directly enhances student academic achievement.

This local challenge reflects a broader wave of skepticism surrounding technology in education across both the state and the nation. School systems are increasingly navigating California mandates restricting mobile phone access during the school day, alongside widespread calls from parents demanding general screen reductions and comprehensive bans on major generative platforms like Claude and ChatGPT across every grade level.

The local debate is further fueled by high-profile warnings from leaders within the technology sector itself. Top chief executives at prominent artificial intelligence developers have recently advocated for a deliberate deceleration in the advancement of sophisticated models to protect society from potential catastrophic consequences.

Pointing to regional precedents, the San Francisco parent group is encouraging district administrators to follow the framework established by the Los Angeles Unified School District. Officials in Los Angeles recently enacted concrete screen-time caps and instituted a comprehensive pause on generative artificial intelligence, though they preserved the Amira reading platform for targeted tutoring support.

In adopting those protective measures, Los Angeles school authorities highlighted several emerging hazards linked to generative chatbots and data-driven generative content. Leaders there noted serious risks regarding automated misinformation, academic dishonesty, unhealthy emotional reliance on machines, and the erosion of a student's self-confidence in their own independent abilities.

Within San Francisco, families are pressing for far greater transparency regarding the software suites already active in classrooms, while simultaneously demanding an official mechanism that allows parents to opt their children out of automated digital instruction. The coalition's platform also requests clear constraints on social media platforms and the creation of formal policies regulating how and when screens can be incorporated into daily lesson plans.

The deployment of Amira Learning’s reading software has emerged as a central flashpoint, particularly among parents of children in early elementary grades who have voiced their frustrations on digital message boards and directly to district administrators.

One local parent, Lisa Swan, described her surprise after discovering that her daughter had been assigned to use the reading application as a first grader without any prior notice from school administrators. With her daughter now in second grade and continuing to receive instruction through the software, Swan argued that young children should not be placed in front of screens for fundamental learning, criticizing the lack of communication from the school.

San Francisco Unified currently utilizes two distinct tools offered by Amira Learning. One component functions as a mandatory screening tool for dyslexia, which aligns with recent California statutory requirements that designated Amira as an officially authorized diagnostic program.

The second product utilized by the district serves as an interactive reading tutor. In this program, elementary students speak aloud into their computer microphones while an animated on-screen character listens, analyzes their speech patterns, and offers automated guidance on pronunciation and reading development.

Advocates for the technology point to an independent study conducted in Louisiana showing measurable improvements in student reading achievement among those utilizing the software, though the underlying research received financial backing from Amira Learning itself.

That commercial backing has done little to satisfy local skeptics like district parent Lori Ronayne, who cautioned against normalizing automated systems as replacements for human teaching across transitional kindergarten through twelfth grade. Ronayne emphasized that researchers have yet to produce long-term evidence evaluating how continuous exposure to AI influences childhood cognitive development, attention spans, and emotional well-being, while also voicing alarm over the collection and storage of children's voice recordings as biometric data.

In response to the growing community resistance, Amira Learning founder and chief executive Mark Angel contended that parent frustration stems from a fundamental misunderstanding of the underlying technology. Angel clarified that his company's software is not a generative chatbot that synthesizes novel material, but rather an interactive, deterministic program comparable to a responsive video game that adapts purely to a student's inputs.
