Law enforcement authorities in Tippecanoe County are actively investigating a pair of early-morning commercial property crimes in West Lafayette, Indiana, where thieves focused their efforts on stealing nicotine vaping products. The consecutive incidents, which occurred within a roughly twenty-four-hour window over the weekend, have drawn heightened attention from investigators due to their geographic proximity and the aggressive tactics used during the first offense.
The sequence of crimes began early Sunday morning with an armed confrontation at a local convenience store and was followed early Monday morning by a commercial break-in at a retail tobacco shop located just nine blocks away. In both instances, the primary items targeted and removed from the premises were retail vape cartridges and assorted nicotine vape products, according to official reports released by the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Department.
According to Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Terry Ruley, the initial incident occurred at approximately 2:20 a.m. Sunday at the Marathon Friendly Market, situated at 1908 Sagamore Parkway W. A 22-year-old store clerk was on duty during the overnight shift and had stepped outside into the lot, walking toward the exterior gas pumps, when an unknown male wielding a full-sized sledgehammer suddenly charged in his direction.
Terrified by the sudden rush, the young store clerk immediately turned around to flee back toward safety, but lost his footing and fell to the pavement. As the worker lay defenseless on the ground, the armed assailant closed the distance and stood directly over him. The suspect then raised the heavy sledgehammer into the air, making a threatening motion as though he intended to strike the fallen clerk.
Chief Deputy Ruley stated that investigators believe the motion was an aggressive bluff designed to intimidate and incapacitate the worker through fear rather than an attempt to inflict direct physical injury. With the store employee immobilized on the ground outside, the assailant did not follow through with a blow and instead redirected his attention toward gaining access to the market’s merchandise.
The perpetrator then marched directly into the Marathon Friendly Market carrying the sledgehammer. Once inside the retail area, he used the heavy tool to shatter the glass display case that housed the store’s inventory of electronic cigarette merchandise. The robber collected several boxes of nicotine vapes and assorted vape cartridges from the destroyed display before turning to make his exit.
Following the smash-and-grab inside the market, the suspect exited the building and fled the property on foot. Law enforcement officers who processed the scene and reviewed initial evidence noted that no getaway vehicle has been directly linked to the suspect or the robbery, suggesting the individual may have approached and left the Sagamore Parkway location entirely on foot.
Sheriff’s investigators compiled a physical description of the Sunday morning robber based on eyewitness accounts and initial reports. The suspect is described as a white male with dark blond hair, standing approximately 6 feet tall with a slender physical build. The individual's weight was estimated to be between 170 and 180 pounds at the time the crime occurred.
Almost exactly twenty-four hours after the gas station robbery, law enforcement responded to a second commercial incident in the immediate vicinity. At roughly 2:10 a.m. Monday, a commercial burglary occurred at Smoke Time, a tobacco and smoking accessories retailer located at 2827 U.S. 52 W., only nine blocks from the site of the Sunday morning robbery.
Surveillance camera footage recovered from outside the tobacco establishment showed two unidentified men loitering near the building shortly after 2:00 a.m. Monday. The security video recorded one of the men walking away from the storefront, while the second individual proceeded to force entry into the retail store to commit the break-in.
Once the intruder breached the interior of Smoke Time, he quickly gathered an undisclosed quantity of nicotine vape cartridges before fleeing the scene. The merchandise targeted in Monday’s burglary matched the specific type of electronic nicotine supplies taken during the violent store robbery the previous morning.
Investigators emphasize that the inquiry remains in its initial phases, and detectives have not yet officially concluded whether the burglar at the tobacco shop and the sledgehammer-wielding robber at the gas station are the exact same individual. Nonetheless, Chief Deputy Ruley pointed out that the striking similarities in merchandise targeted, the close physical proximity of the two businesses, and the near-identical timing during consecutive overnight hours make the connection a central focus of the ongoing investigation.
The Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Department continues to review available surveillance footage from both business locations and surrounding properties to track suspect movements and identify any accomplices who may have assisted during or after the incidents. Local merchants operating late-night retail locations along the commercial corridors of Sagamore Parkway and U.S. 52 have been urged to maintain heightened security awareness.
