Tributes and grief have swept across South Africa following the tragic death of respected sports journalist and former public broadcaster presenter Owen Ndlovu, who was found dead shortly after being kidnapped during an armed carjacking in a township on the outskirts of Johannesburg.
The 54-year-old media personality, widely recognized for his extensive work with the South African Broadcasting Corporation, was seized by armed assailants on Tuesday evening. The violent abduction ended in tragedy when local residents discovered his body dumped along a roadway the following morning, bearing what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds.
According to provincial law enforcement authorities, the kidnapping occurred while Ndlovu had driven to a local church in the township of Katlehong to collect his wife following a religious gathering. Investigators reported that the suspects struck rapidly as the couple was preparing to depart from the venue.
Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi explained that Ndlovu's wife was approaching their vehicle when three unidentified men suddenly intercepted them. One of the perpetrators was visibly armed with a firearm. The attackers violently shoved Ndlovu’s wife out of the way before forcing the veteran presenter into the rear seat of his own vehicle.
The three assailants then sped away from the church premises with Ndlovu trapped inside, prompting an immediate and frantic search by his family, local residents, and law enforcement agencies across the region.
The vehicle taken during the kidnapping—a Ford Raptor pick-up truck, locally referred to across South Africa as a bakkie—was subsequently tracked down and recovered by police officers. It had been abandoned in Walkerville, a semi-rural area situated south of Johannesburg.
Tragically, Ndlovu did not survive the ordeal. On Wednesday morning, residents in the neighbouring township of Thokoza stumbled upon his lifeless body lying along the roadside. Eyewitnesses at the scene observed severe injuries consistent with gunshots, while investigators noted that a personal bag belonging to the broadcaster was found discarded a short distance from where his body lay.
The South African Police Service confirmed that a formal murder investigation has been initiated and a manhunt is actively underway to identify and apprehend the three suspects involved in the attack. Police stated that an official post-mortem examination is scheduled to definitively establish the exact cause of death.
Speaking on behalf of the grieving household, family spokesperson Eugene Mthethwa conveyed the overwhelming sorrow felt by relatives as they await further updates from law enforcement. He noted that the family remains devastated by the sudden loss and expressed deep gratitude toward the police officers, township residents, and community members who mobilized swiftly to search for Ndlovu following his disappearance.
