The facility, currently operating as the Hilliard Center, officially adopted its new name last September after transitioning away from its former identity as the American Bank Center. The renaming process drew notable public interest following municipal decisions regarding the property's naming rights, which notably bypassed a high-profile proposal from prominent personal injury attorney Thomas J. Henry.
Originally constructed more than two decades ago, the 22-year-old downtown venue has served as a central hub for community gatherings, live performances, and regional entertainment. City records indicate that the coastal destination continues to attract substantial foot traffic, hosting more than 216,000 patrons and visitors across its varied programming each year.
To address the wear and tear accumulated over decades of continuous operation, the Corpus Christi City Council took formal action in June to revitalize the civic asset. Municipal leaders approved an expenditure plan dedicating up to $4,055,702 toward comprehensive facility improvements, accessibility enhancements, and essential structural upgrades.
The substantial capital commitment follows detailed evaluations by city building officials, who concluded that the aging facility exhibited extensive signs of physical deterioration. Inspectors determined that key components of the venue no longer conformed to current industry benchmarks concerning energy efficiency, functional design, general accessibility, and overall patron satisfaction.
In an official memorandum submitted to the City Council on June 23, Corpus Christi City Manager Peter Zanoni underscored the critical necessity of the impending capital investments. Zanoni emphasized that several core building systems within the entertainment complex had reached the end of their operational lifespans and required urgent intervention.
The most substantial and costly component of the approved municipal overhaul is a targeted $3.2 million initiative to rehabilitate the facility's expansive overhead structure. Regulatory documentation submitted to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation outlines extensive structural work spanning the venue’s 86,000-square-foot roof.
According to regulatory project filings, construction crews are scheduled to officially commence work on the massive roofing replacement in January 2027. The complex engineering undertaking is projected to require approximately 12 full months of continuous labor to reach final completion.
The scope of the structural roofing contract entails the total removal and replacement of the existing protective roof membrane. Contractors will also execute critical repairs to the underlying roof decking, install new parapet coping systems, and overhaul the facility's extensive stormwater drainage infrastructure.
To ensure long-term stability and safety along the coastal environment, the project mandates the replacement of equipment curbs, modernized lightning protection systems, and updated fire-suppression manifolds. Crews will additionally replace corroded bolts across the venue's interior structural trusses to reinforce the building’s core structural integrity.
Beyond structural and protective exterior repairs, the city has allocated significant funds toward renovating high-traffic interior spaces. Planned interior work focuses heavily on the venue's second-floor concourse, which will receive completely refreshed flooring, newly painted walls, and an updated layout to streamline visitor movement.
Public hospitality and food services will also experience comprehensive modernization under the renovation plan. The project incorporates the development of newly designed concession areas, supported by the installation of modern commercial refrigerators, heavy-duty water heaters, and updated culinary service equipment.
Premium guest environments are slated for notable upgrades as well. The entertainment complex will see full interior remodels across its private guest suites and hospitality lounges, providing refreshed accommodations intended to support upscale viewing experiences during major events.
Improving inclusivity and patron convenience represents another core priority of the municipal initiative. The planned interior construction includes the complete architectural redesign of the second-floor public restrooms alongside targeted architectural adjustments to expand overall Americans with Disabilities Act compliance across the property.
City administrators reiterated that these comprehensive interventions are necessary to safeguard both the operational reliability and the public safety of the civic property. By replacing obsolete equipment and reinforcing mechanical infrastructure, the city expects to substantially lower maintenance liabilities while ensuring safe day-to-day operations.
Once construction concludes, city officials anticipate that the extensive renovations will reposition the waterfront landmark as a modern, competitive event destination.
