The man who was fatally shot during the confrontation was later identified by the county medical examiner’s office as 44-year-old Michael Rodriguez. The video release by the Santa Monica Police Department offers a clear perspective on the critical moments immediately preceding the gunfire that claimed his life.
The encounter occurred on the afternoon of August 22, when emergency dispatchers directed patrol units to the intersection of Broadway and Ocean Avenue shortly before 1:00 p.m. Police had initially been sent to the area following an urgent report that an unidentified man was actively pursuing a woman near the Broadway stairs leading down toward the coastline.

As personnel conducted interviews and attempted to assess the initial complaint, an entirely separate and unexpected threat emerged in their immediate vicinity.
According to police officials, officers on the scene suddenly observed an adult male, later determined to be Rodriguez, brandishing a large cutting weapon above his head.
