Santa Monica Police Release Bodycam Footage of Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting at Palisades Park

Law enforcement authorities in Santa Monica have made public body-worn camera video capturing the fatal shooting of an armed man who approached officers in the middle of a heavily populated coastal park. The newly disclosed footage documents the tense sequence of events that unfolded in Palisades Park, providing visual evidence of the rapid escalation that resulted in the use of deadly force by responding officers.

The man who was fatally shot during the confrontation was later identified by the county medical examiner’s office as 44-year-old Michael Rodriguez. The video release by the Santa Monica Police Department offers a clear perspective on the critical moments immediately preceding the gunfire that claimed his life.

The encounter occurred on the afternoon of August 22, when emergency dispatchers directed patrol units to the intersection of Broadway and Ocean Avenue shortly before 1:00 p.m. Police had initially been sent to the area following an urgent report that an unidentified man was actively pursuing a woman near the Broadway stairs leading down toward the coastline.

Upon arriving at the scene near the Santa Monica Pier, officers moved into adjacent Palisades Park to gather preliminary statements from witnesses regarding the reported pursuit. As personnel conducted interviews and attempted to assess the initial complaint, an entirely separate and unexpected threat emerged in their immediate vicinity.

According to police officials, officers on the scene suddenly observed an adult male, later determined to be Rodriguez, brandishing a large cutting weapon above his head. Investigators confirmed that Rodriguez was entirely unconnected to the original domestic disturbance and chase that officers had initially arrived to investigate.

The newly publicized body camera recording shows Rodriguez advancing steadily toward the uniformed officers while lowering the blade to point it directly in their direction. As he closed the distance between himself and the police perimeter, officers drew their service weapons and began issuing urgent verbal warnings in an attempt to halt his approach.

The audio captured on the recording reveals an officer shouting stern directives in rapid succession, demanding, "Hey, put that down! Put that down! Put that down!" Despite the repeated verbal commands to drop the weapon, Rodriguez continued to move forward toward the officers, prompting an officer to discharge their firearm to neutralize the perceived threat.

The violent encounter occurred in a bustling public space during peak weekend daylight hours, directly in front of weekend vendors, strolling families, and numerous park visitors. In the video recordings, several terrified bystanders can be observed quickly scattering and fleeing the path of the advancing suspect as the confrontation reached its climax.

Following the shooting, investigators examined the weapon Rodriguez had brandished and described it as a substantial, fixed-blade utility-style knife featuring serrated edges along its side. A subsequent search of Rodriguez’s belongings and person revealed that he was carrying a total of three knives at the time of the confrontation.

Immediately after the shots were fired, officers on scene shifted to emergency protocol and attempted to administer lifesaving first aid to the wounded man. Responding personnel initiated resuscitation efforts on the grass while awaiting paramedics to arrive at the scene.

Park visitor Caroline Iwanchuk witnessed the immediate aftermath of the gunfire and the attempts by law enforcement personnel to sustain Rodriguez’s life. Iwanchuk recounted seeing officers vigorously performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the ground, noting how distressing the sudden life-or-death scene was to observe in a place typically reserved for recreation.

"I literally came out, and I could see them doing chest compressions on the gentleman. It was just very hard to witness," Iwanchuk stated while describing the chaotic and somber atmosphere that quickly enveloped the park.

Emergency medical personnel subsequently transported Rodriguez from Palisades Park to a nearby hospital for advanced trauma care. Despite the immediate medical intervention provided at the scene and subsequent hospital efforts, medical staff officially pronounced the 44-year-old deceased shortly after his arrival.

The critical incident necessitated an extensive law enforcement response that cordoned off a substantial section of Palisades Park for numerous hours. Crime scene tape and investigative units remained in place well into the evening as forensic teams gathered physical evidence, documented ballistics, and interviewed civilian witnesses.

Officials with the Santa Monica Police Department emphasized that all details released alongside the video footage remain preliminary as the broader investigation continues to unfold. Detectives are currently carrying out a formal criminal inquiry into the incident to reconstruct the exact timeline and factors that led to the confrontation.

In tandem with the primary criminal investigation, the Santa Monica Police Department’s Internal Affairs Unit has initiated an independent administrative review of the shooting. That internal inquiry is tasked with evaluating the tactics employed, determining adherence to department policies regarding the use of deadly force, and analyzing the full circumstances surrounding the fatal encounter.
