The 37-year-old hiker, who wishes to remain anonymous, has contributed $10,000 to the Spokane Regional Air Support Unit (SRASU), the organization responsible for the daring rescue operation.
The incident unfolded on July 30th, as the climber attempted to scale the challenging 7,960-foot Mount Daniel. Starting from the Cathedral Rock trailhead at dawn, the climber made it to the summit by late afternoon. However, on his descent, he took a wrong turn, leading him onto a narrow cliff ledge surrounded by steep terrain.
As daylight began to fade, the climber found himself trapped with no safe route to higher ground or down. He spent 18 hours on the ledge, enduring cold temperatures and sleepless nights, as the risk of falling loomed large. "It was the toughest experience I ever had to face," he later recounted to the rescuers.
In a harrowing situation, the climber finally managed to call for help. The Washington State Emergency Operations Center was notified, and SRASU's Rescue Three crew was dispatched. The team, including two pilots, a crew chief, and two helicopter rescue medics, launched from Spokane's Felts Field early the next morning.
Using GPS coordinates provided by the climber, the Rescue Three crew navigated their helicopter to a spot near the cliff. The crew chief, Jeff Welton, used a powerful cable lift to lower medic Scott Niebuhr directly onto the ledge next to the climber. Following the rescue, Niebuhr and another medic, John Dugger, conducted a medical evaluation. Despite the climber's terrifying experience, he was found to be in good condition with no major injuries. The Rescue Three crew then safely transported him to the ground and cleared him for return home.
